Abkhazia celebrates the Day of the National Flag

The modern state flag of the Republic of Abkhazia was approved by the session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Abkhazia on July 23, 1992.

 The national flag of the Republic of Abkhazia is the official state symbol of the Republic. The national flag is a rectangular panel. On its length are seven alternating equal in width bands of green and white colors, of which four are green and three are white. The bands begin with the upper row, the first band is green. In the upper corner near the flag pole there is a rectangle of purple color measuring 0.38 of the length of the flag and a width of three stripes. In the center of the purple rectangle, the open palm of the right hand of white is vertically located. Seven five-pointed stars are located above the palm of the semicircle.

  The participant of the national liberation movement, author of the text of the Hymn of Abkhazia Gennady Alamiya: "Flag appeared at the right time. There are many memories of how this flag was created, but what is important is that it became a symbol of the national liberation movement. The flag appeared at a time when we were still in Parliament together with the Georgian part. I remember the day when the flag was submitted for approval to the Parliament, which persons were in the hall. It was necessary to look not at the flag itself, but at the emotions that it caused. On that day there was a turning point in people's minds. The enemies of our independence were shaken by the foundation of their theory of the inviolability of Georgia's territorial integrity, and those who did not doubt that we would achieve freedom and independence added determination. "  

According to Alamiya, the author and the flag artist Valery Gamgia managed to reflect the entire history of our statehood in it. "Later this principle formed the basis of creation of the anthem. Nothing was invented, everything came from ancient times. There were mentioned the deities guarding our land, friendship with our brothers" - he noted.  

"The flag was cut and sewn by hands of the mother" - said Chairman of the Movement "Mothers of Abkhazia for Peace and Social Justice" - Guli Kichba.  

"During the war, many women knitted and sewed a flag from pieces of cloth and put them in soldiers' pockets. I am pleased that Flag Day is solemnly celebrating by our people. I remember how Kharlam Simoniya accompanied by our elders introduced a flag. I had tears in my eyes, people were exulting. Now this flag is especially dear to me, because our Holy Victory was won underneath, under this flag our children went to war, " - Kichba recalled.
