Abkhazia will proceed from existing agreements with "Rosneft" and monitor compliance with environmental standards
Abkhazia is going to proceed from existing agreements with the Russian company "Rosneft", told "Interfax" President of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba on Friday.

Sukhum. August 3. Apsnypress. "There are certain concerns about the possible development of the oil in the Abkhaz society. This question is completely new for Abkhazia, as the basis of our economy are traditionally tourism and subtropical agriculture, which are very vulnerable in terms of ecology", - told "Interfax" President of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba.

"Often it sounds the idea of a moratorium on the production of hydrocarbons on the Abkhazian section of the sea shelf. A number of Members of Parliament and some civil society organizations have recently made a proposal to fix it legislatively", - said Khadjimba.

"However, to allay fears in the community, this issue should be studied in detail. So I asked the Parliament to create a commission to study the prospects for the production of hydrocarbons, and not follow the path of the law on the prohibition of exploration and development of oil", - said the head of state.

"We will proceed from existing agreements with the Russian company" Rosneft ", while ensuring adequate control of compliance with environmental regulations and other interests of the state. I hope that the findings of the parliamentary commission to help find the best solution to the problem in the interest of the people of Abkhazia and its Russian partners ", - concluded Khadjimba.

Previously, the company "Rosneft" declared its readiness to suspend all of its projects in Abkhazia for discussion by the Parliament of the Republic of the possibility of introducing a moratorium on oil extraction.
