Chirikba: Our main common goal is to achieve stability in the region
The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry hosted a meeting of the Foreign Minister Viacheslav Chirikba with the Co-chairs of the Geneva International discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia.

Sukhum. May 25. Apsnypress. Dmitry Basariya. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Herbert Salber, the special representative of the UN Secretary General in Georgia Antti Turunen, Senior Policy Advisor to the UN Special Representative to the Geneva talks Hailu Mamo.

The meeting discussed the agenda of the forthcoming round of the Geneva discussions on security and stability in the South Caucasus, as well as questions relating to the possibility of the resumption of the mechanism for preventing and responding to incidents. In particular, the Abkhaz side expressed a desire to discuss the question of a joint investigation with the Georgian side of the incident in the village of Bataiguara between military border detachment of the State Security Service of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Georgian citizen.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia Viacheslav Chirikba said: "Despite all the difficulties that arise in our way, we must not forget that our main goal is to achieve joint stability in the region. The sad event that occurred on the Abkhaz-Georgian border, should not change the course of the Geneva discussions. This is especially important in the negotiations on the resumption of the Mechanism to prevent and respond to incidents (MPRI)".

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Herbert Salber agreed with the Minister that the security in Transcaucasia is the main mission of all participants in the negotiations.

"Certainly, we are obliged to respond to the mentioned tragic incident. We are aware of the fact that the Abkhaz side has already taken measures for its investigation. We hope that the forthcoming meeting of the MPRI will contribute to clarify the next steps regarding the incident. In spite of everything, our agenda in Geneva is the same, we will talk about the use of force and many other important aspects that contribute to stability in the region. We, in turn, expect to go through with the implementation of these peaceful purposes", - he said.

(AP): The next 36 round of the Geneva discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia will be held on June 14-15.
