Ecological state of Abkhazia is very fragile and needs careful treatment - Director of the Institute of Ecology Roman Dbar
Director of the Institute of Ecology ANA Roman Dbar told Apsnypress about the state of the environment in Abkhazia and the impact of the global climate change.

Sukhum. April 22. Apsnypress. Today the world celebrates International Mother Earth Day, proclaimed by the UN in 1992. According to the director of the Institute of Ecology ANA Roman Dbar, the ecological state of Abkhazia compared with the other countries in the Black Sea region is at a high level. "However, this ecological well-being is very fragile and in need of careful treatment. Ecology is the main resource for the development of the country. Therefore, any decision to involve natural resources in economic activities should be based on scientific research", - said in an interview with "Apsnypress" Dbar.

According to him, environmental well-being of Abkhazia is due to the fact that it does not have a developed industry which pollutes the environment. "Despite this rosy picture, global climate change and urban development have had a significant impact on the ecosystem of Abkhazia", - said Dbar.

In particular, as a result of studying the dynamics of weather changes on the territory of Abkhazia in the last 20-30 years, the average annual temperature has increased by 1,6 ° C which leads to early onset of spring and, as a consequence, unstable weather conditions as it may cause damage to early-flowering fruit crops.

Also, there is an increase in rainfall leading to flooding of the rivers that deplete the coast and threatening communications (bridges, roads, power lines). Precipitation over the territory of Abkhazia formed over the territory of industrialized Europe and therefore are composed of chemical agents that play a role in environmental pollution. According to the director of the Institute, observing the avifauna of Abkhazia has shown that due to global climate change and urban growth in the last ten years the population of nesting birds such as the black stork, swan and others  has decreased.

The study of water resources and the marine environment of Abkhazia identified a number of dangerous trends that threaten the balance of the ecosystem. "Because of the pollution of estuarine zones of small rivers flowing through settlements, reduced reproductive role in filling these reservoirs of fishery resources. Reduced the number of high-value and relict species (Black Sea salmon, Colchis sturgeon ) due to poaching and water pollution. Due to the rash installation in the coastal area of engineering structures (breakwaters, jetties, piers) in some areas are disappearing beaches of Abkhazia. This is due to the fact that the beaches are formed by sediment gravel and sand from rivers. Studies have shown that under the threat of erosion were some parts of the coastal zone of Gagra, Sukhum and Promoskoye", - said Roman Dbar.

Ecologist notes that the beach area is a key resource for the development of resorts, so even a slight reduction in the beach leads to significant economic losses of tourism and infrastructure which is vital to the economy of our country.

"This day is not considered as a holiday in the usual sense, and is celebrated as the day aimed to ensure the attention of all people of good will on the need for urgent action to save and rescue Mother Earth", - said Roman Dbar.
