New Athos will held vigil in honor of the enlightener of Abkhazia Apostle Simon the Kananit

Sukhum. May 22. Apsnypress. Festive divine services would be committed by a host of the clergy headed by the Abkhaz Orthodox Church's Priest Vissarion Apliaa. Is planned an arrival of parishioners of all Orthodox temples of Abkhazia, pilgrims and invited guests. In addition, in the morning, on Saturday, near the Temple of of St. Apostle Simon the Kananit will be served blessing of water moleben and akathist. And at 9:00 will begin the commission of festive Divine Liturgy with religious procession. Temple of St. Apostle Simon the Kananit was built on the site of burial of the Apostle who accepted a martyr's death in Abkhazia where he came with the preaching of the Word of God. 

In Abkhazia, St. Simon did a lot of signs and wonders by the power of his preaching many people converted to Christ. Because of this, he has repeatedly been attacked by the pagans. Soon, like most of the Apostles, Simon was martyred. Students buried the saint's body near his cave. To the tomb began to come believers asking for help and healing from diseases. According to legend, back in I century near the cave of St. Simon scored a healing source that still exists today. In the IV century on the burial place of the Apostle was built a temple in his honor. To this day, Orthodox Christians and pilgrims of Abkhazia asked Apostle Simon about intercession and assistance in life, the welfare of marriage and the strengthening of faith and receive it. 

Commemoration of the Apostle Simon Kananit is a public holiday in the Republic of Abkhazia.
