The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia commented on the statement of Georgian politicians that the country conducts talks on the political status with Georgia.
Sukhum. November 6. Apsnypress. During the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of the Association Georgia - European Union the head of the so-called Ministry of reconciliation and civil equality of Georgia Paata Zakareishvili declared readiness of the Georgian leadership to consider a model of a federal state structure, with special political status for Abkhazia.
The parliamentary majority also claimed the alleged ongoing bilateral Georgian-Abkhaz consultations on the political status of Abkhazia, which are led by Paata Zakareishvili personally from the Georgian side.
In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia officially declares that the Abkhaz side conducts no talks on the political status of Abkhazia with the Georgian side. This statement of Georgian politicians is a blatant lie. The only international negotiating format, which is attended by the Abkhaz and Georgian sides, remains the Geneva discussions, where the question of the status of Abkhazia is not discussed.
It is obvious that the unfounded statements by Georgian politicians are intended to mislead the international community. Apparently, this information is aimed primarily at Georgia's western partners who make the continuation of the provision of financial assistance to Georgia dependent on progress in the negotiations with Abkhazia.
The people of Abkhazia definitively determined the political status of the country, adopting the 1994 Constitution of a sovereign independent state, which was confirmed in a national referendum, and the Act on State Independence of 1999.
Relations between Georgia and Abkhazia can be restored only on the basis of official recognition by Georgia of independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Abkhazia.
