Recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by the Russian Federation is a completed political fact

On February 5, 2015 NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, speaking to reporters in Brussels again demanded that Russia must withdraw its recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states and withdraw its troops from the territory of the two republics, as alleged, "they are parts of Georgia".

These requirements address to the Russian Federation are often heard. For example, on April 5 2009 in Strasbourg on the anniversary summit of NATO in the final declaration of the NATO member states reaffirmed unconditional support for Georgia's territorial integrity and called on the Russian Federation to abolish the decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, calling them "regions of Georgia".

NATO's position with respect to Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is well known. However, it should again be emphasized that the requirement of the Secretary General of NATO is absolutely groundless, because the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by the Russian Federation - is a political fact in charge of all the principles of international law and it does not violate the UN Charter. The language used by Mr. Ian Stoltenberg in his statement is not true, as Abkhazia and South Ossetia are no longer "parts of Georgia".

Endless and futile appeals of NATO to Russia to cancel the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are totally inappropriate. Recall that the independent status of the two republics, in addition to Russia, found five other states - members of the UN.

Today we can safely say that the North Atlantic Alliance and along with them some European institutions simply refuse to recognize the political realities prevailing in the South Caucasus region. Abkhazia has chosen its path - the path of building an independent state, and no statements by officials of NATO will not be able to shake the course of independent development.
