The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia held a briefing on the results of 38th Round of Geneva Talks on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia.
Sukhum. December 19. Apsnypress. Lana Tsvizhba. Summarizing 38th Round of Geneva talks, Deputy Foreign Minister Kan Taniya said: "It is the only official international place, where we directly communicate with the main political, geo-political actors in the region. Such countries as the USA, Russia, EU, UN and OSCE".
According to Kan Taniya, 38th round was very positive, in spite of the non-constructive position of Georgia. "For the first time since 2008, we were close to the adoption of a joint statement of commitment to the non-use of force. The main objective of participation of Abkhaz delegation in the Geneva talks is the signing of a legally binding agreement on the nonuse of force between Georgia and Abkhazia. But the Georgian position is absolutely non-constructive ", - said Taniya.
The Deputy Minister said that it was decided to adopt a joint statement of commitment to the non-use of force. According to him, this kind of statement would be a step towards signing a legally binding document. "Over the 37th rounds all parties involved in the discussions, as well as intermediary - the Russian Federation, the US, EU, UN and OSCE - could not come to even approximate text, which would suit all parties. After 38 rounds, all parties came to a common version of the text, except for the Georgian side, which at the last moment interrupted the adoption of joint statement. We would be surprised if the Georgian side had agreed to adopt a joint statement of commitment to the non-use of force. Nevertheless, we hope that this kind of joint statement will be taken in the near future", - said Taniya.
As explained Kan Taniya, during the discussion they discussed the problem of non-recognition of the vital documents issued in Abkhazia (birth certificate, high school diploma, diploma of higher education, etc...), biased and politicized structure of the report of the European Union and the OSCE in the field of human rights violations in Abkhazia, quarterly Georgian Foreign Ministry's reports on human rights in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the incident of inappropriate Georgian reaction to the issue of Turkish newspaper "Sabah", dedicated to the Republic of Abkhazia, the situation with the crossing of the state border with Georgia through the checkpoint Inguri, intensifying military partnership of NATO and Georgia, the ongoing efforts of the international isolation of the citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia and more.
Taniya said that the representatives of the Republic of Abkhazia handed samples of foreign and diplomatic passports to the co-chairs of the Geneva International discussions to further substantive discussion of the possibility of their recognition as travel documents, as well as gave an appropriate letter to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to provide assistance in resolving this important humanitarian issue.
