President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General at the Geneva discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia Antti Turunen.
Sukhum. April 21. Apsnypress. During the meeting were discussed the agenda of the 32 rounds of the Geneva discussions, as well as the priority issues of cooperation.
Antti Turunen met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Chirikba and discussed the results of the last round of Geneva talks.
"As part of this process, we are looking forward continuing to work in the format of mechanisms to prevent and respond to incidents (MPRI) and discussion of the topic at the five-party meeting in the Gal district", - said Antti Turunen. According to him, despite the complexity of the issues, in particular relating to political issues in the negotiations achieved the progress that has more to do with humanitarian activities. UN pays much attention to the needs of the local population and is ready to support the government of Abkhazia in solving problems and specific issues in the field.
"Thank you for the wish to continue to work together which for us is no less important. But I would like to see these relations that are developing within the framework of the Geneva discussions, not becoming as a tradition which does solve not any specific tasks. While we are waiting for the understanding of the international community, the opposing Georgian side should understand that the processes are irreversible, and there will not be return to the past", - said Khadjimba. As for the local population of the Gal district, regardless of the situation that has evolved in recent years when it was necessary to determine which civil status people had on the territory of Abkhazia - Georgian citizens residing in the Republic of Abkhazia, or citizens of Abkhazia, today we dont pay attention to such details. It is important for us that the population live in a safe atmosphere, and has been involved in economic and political life of the country. The President stressed that the solution of the problems of Gal district is especially - care of the Abkhazian state. But if the UN turns to the work, the Abkhaz side is ready "to use properly these opportunities".
Following the meeting, Antti Turunen said what the interaction areas of the United Nations and the Republic of Abkhazia can become a priority: "These are - health, education, preservation of cultural heritage. I think we can make progress by promoting and supporting the dialogue that has been established within the framework of the Geneva discussions. Those small channels of interaction between the parties and supporting the local population in search of livelihood are the methods that help to establish peace and stability in the region".
