The Public Chamber of the Republic of Abkhazia held a meeting with the co-chairman of the Geneva discussions on Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg.

Sukhum. June 14. Apsnypress. Said Dzharsaliya. Co-Chair of the Geneva discussions on Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg informed the members of the Public Chamber on the upcoming study in Abkhazia.

At the same time, Thomas Hammarberg, said: "I had the opportunity to participate in this kind of debate in many countries. The Public Chamber is an institution that is similar to the country's parliament. This is a platform that makes it possible for civil society to express their views and to have a connection with the country's leadership".

According to Thomas Hammarberg, his visit to Abkhazia is connected with the decision of the international community, mandated to assess and analyze the situation of human rights in the country. "In many cases, observance of human rights perceives controversial and has an impact on policy. Human rights should not be part of propaganda, but should be observed in everyday life. Issues related to human rights exist in all countries ", - he said.

Thomas Hammarberg plans to investigate the personal rights of each individual, such as the rights of children, women, minorities, people with disabilities, as well as respect for human rights in the judicial system. "It is extremely important for us that the main justice system works properly. It is also important that this system should protect the rights of poor people who can not hire a lawyer ", - he said.

Monitoring is supposed to be carried out by personal contact, both with the authorities and ordinary citizens. According to the results of research there will be drawn up a report which, together with recommendations will be provided to the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia.

In turn, the Public Chamber's Secretary Natella Akaba said: "We have several good reasons, which create obstacles to the observance of human rights after the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, when there were destroyed not only the infrastructure, but also the relationship between people. The society was traumatized. In addition, Abkhazia is a partially recognized country and that we are not members of international organizations, has the impact on human rights".

She stressed that there were held several sufficiently democratic presidential elections. "Nevertheless, we often hear that the elections will not be recognized. This is largely deprives our citizens of motivation to be real, democratic country. I would like to see our friends and colleagues from international organizations to think about how to motivate citizens of partially recognized countries to have successes in the sphere of human rights protection. Unfortunately, there is not this motivation", - said Natella Akaba.
