36 years ago it was decided to reorganize the Sukhum State Pedagogical Institute A. Gorky to the Abkhazian State University. In this regard, the ASU's rector, Professor, Academician of Natural Sciences Aleko Gvaramiya gave a press conference for the media.

In his opening remarks, the ASU's rector Aleko Gvaramiya said: "After the reorganization of the institute to the university, students began training in the native Abkhazian language, in their native environment. This is very important! Nobody from the outside has what is called the mentality of the people. And without such a serious argument all economic models will collapse under its pressure. That is why we can say that the university is a national treasure".

According to Gvaramiya, the University has experienced many things: war, post-war blockade, devastation, when the university building stood without windows and doors. ASU had a lot of help Russian universities. Thus, the rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichiy, as president of the Eurasian Association of Universities, in November 1993, took the Abkhazian University, which existed only on paper, in this association. And today the main university of the country is already included in the Oxford Academic Union, working under the auspices of the Club of Rectors of Europe, the ASU's rector is a member .

"Even during the war, in Gudauta we had arrangements that allowed in October 1993 to start the course. Studied first one, then two, three, and, finally, five days a week. In the post-war situation in the days of severe psychological strain university took all comers. We enrolled children from the street, with a raised squatting "- recalled the rector.

According to him, first of all decided to prepare psychologists and speech therapists, together with the Moscow Institute of socio-humanitarian. During the existence of a cooperation agreement has already prepared 236 specialists. Then, with the Ural Technical University began to produce Engineers (118 graduates). Under an agreement with MGIMO and via the Foundation of the Institute of Eurasian Studies, introduced training in "international relations". About 30 teachers of MGIMO lectured to students of ASU.

Entering and other specialties: design, power (about 100 graduates), medical biochemistry at the Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy (about 20 graduates defended their theses at the Institute).

ASU's rector spoke about the problems of the target areas for training: "Russia provides the place that is called the limit for our students in Russian universities. But it is important to understand what the target of the order? For each year we have to work hard to organizations, ministries, departments, agencies, provided your order on those or other specialists. What do we do?! Almost after 9th grade students actually taken out of school and are prepared with a tutor only on those subjects in which it is necessary to take entrance exams. We maim children! ". As stressed by Aleko Gvaramiya, we must raise school. To this end, in 2003 the program has been prepared by "Country Teacher". Until now it has not been realized even by half.

On the question of what steps are being made today at ASU for the development of the mother tongue, especially in light of the entry into force of the Law on the State Language, Aleko Gvaramiya said: "We thought about this problem, not only now, but since the post-war years. Back in 1997, the program has been prepared "Abkhazian language in Abkhazia University", which was later used in the state program of development of the Abkhaz language. Department was established for the preparation of literature in Abkhazian language. Produced more than 150 types of textbooks and manuals, dictionaries and programs. Abkhazian language has been taught in all educational groups. Decided to create a separate chair of the Abkhazian language".

ASU's rector spoke about the transition to the new university, a two-level (master's and bachelor's degree) training system. Treaty with Russia, such work should be carried out jointly. But ASU recently created an educational-methodical department, which "monitors" the whole Russian experience in this area, which makes it possible to prepare their proposals. "Therefore, we can reduce the time and will soon be sent to Moscow, to the Ministry of Education and Science, our representative for the harmonization of relevant educational programs and discussion of educational standards".

Compared with the Pedagogical Institute ASU has 2 times more departments. In the period since 1996, to protect the 130 candidates of sciences, 16 doctors, 47 ASU graduates studying in graduate school of the Russian Federation.
